Assistant Technical Designer - Greenhouse/Irrigation
Job Responsibilities
Greenhouse & Irrigation System Design
- Assist in the design and preparation of technical solutions for greenhouse and irrigation projects.
- Prepare irrigation system layouts based on crop requirements, Farm/site characteristics, water source and availability, required irrigation method, required flow rates and pressures, farm size and topography, customer requirements, available irrigation equipment.
- Assist with the design of various irrigation systems, including where applicable, drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, micro-irrigation, fertigation systems, pumping systems, filtration systems, water distribution systems and irrigation networks for greenhouse projects.
- Support technical calculations including pipe sizing, flow requirements, pressure requirements and basic hydraulic calculations.
- Assist in selecting appropriate irrigation components and equipment based on system requirements.
- Support greenhouse structural design and layout for commercially available covered farming structures.
- Ensure designs are practical, technically sound and suitable for installation and operation.
- Review designs with the Senior Technical Designer before submission to customers or implementation teams.
AutoCAD & Technical Draughting
- Prepare accurate technical drawings using AutoCAD or other approved CAD software.
- Produce greenhouse and irrigation drawings based on approved designs and site information.
- Prepare, revise and maintain site layouts, Irrigation layouts, Greenhouse layouts, Pipe network drawings, equipment layouts, pump and filtration arrangements, system schematics, Installation drawings.
- Incorporate engineering and technical specifications into drawings.
- Ensure drawings contain appropriate dimensions, legends, notes, symbols, equipment references and revision information.
- Maintain drawing accuracy and consistency across different project documents.
- Make design amendments and revisions based on technical reviews, site conditions or customer requirements.
- Ensure only approved and current drawings are issued for project execution.
- Maintain proper electronic and physical filing of drawings and design documents.
Site Surveys & Technical Verification
- Participate in site visits and surveys for greenhouse and irrigation projects.
- Collect and verify technical information required for design, including site dimensions, topography, water source, water availability, existing infrastructure, pumping arrangements, power availability, farm layout, crop requirements, proposed greenhouse location etc.
- Take accurate measurements and ensure that site information used in drawings is reliable.
- Identify site constraints that may affect design, installation or project cost.
- Liaise with sales, agronomy, project and technical teams to obtain missing project information.
- Update designs where actual site conditions differ from initial assumptions.
Bill of Quantities (BOQ) Preparation
- Prepare detailed Bills of Quantities for greenhouse and irrigation projects.
- Accurately determine quantities of pipes, fittings, valves, filters, pumps, drippers, sprinklers, fertigation equipment, greenhouse structures, covering materials, irrigation accessories, electrical/control components where applicable, installation materials and other project-specific components.
- Ensure BOQs are based on approved technical drawings and specifications.
- Cross-check BOQs against drawings to ensure completeness and accuracy.
- Identify omissions, duplication or inconsistencies before submission.
- Update BOQs following design changes.
- Maintain standard BOQ templates and item descriptions where applicable.
- Work closely with Procurement, Sales, Finance and Project teams where pricing or product information is required.
Cost Estimation & Quotations
- Prepare detailed project cost estimates based on approved designs and BOQs.
- Assist in preparation of customer quotations for greenhouse and irrigation projects.
- Ensure that all major project cost components are captured.
- Obtain and verify applicable product prices and technical specifications.
- Assist in costing of equipment, materials, structures & accessories, installation requirements and other project-related costs.
- Identify opportunities to optimise project costs without compromising technical integrity or quality.
- Ensure quotation inputs are consistent with approved technical designs and BOQs.
- Support revisions to quotations resulting from changes in scope or customer requirements.
- Maintain confidentiality and accuracy of costing information.
Technical Documentation & Drawing Management
- Maintain an organised technical documentation system for all assigned projects.
- Maintain current versions of drawings, BOQs, cost estimates, technical specifications, site survey information, project revisions.
- Maintain project documentation in accordance with Amiran Kenya's document-control procedures.
- Support preparation of technical reports and project documentation.
Project Technical Support
- Provide technical support during project implementation.
- Clarify technical drawings and specifications to project implementation teams.
- Support resolution of technical queries arising during installation.
- Liaise with project teams to identify design-related challenges.
- Support technical inspections and verification of installed systems.
- Assist in identifying deviations between approved designs and actual installations.
- Support preparation of technical modifications where required.
- Participate in project review meetings where technical input is required.
- Support commissioning activities and technical handover where assigned.
Technical & Application Support
- Provide technical information on greenhouse structures and irrigation equipment.
- Support the Sales and Business Development teams with technical information during customer engagements.
- Explain technical features, applications, limitations and appropriate use of greenhouse and irrigation products.
- Assist in matching customer requirements with appropriate technical solutions.
- Support preparation of technical proposals and presentations.
- Assist in responding to customer technical queries.
- Keep abreast of new greenhouse, irrigation, fertigation and agricultural infrastructure technologies.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of Amiran's available greenhouse and irrigation product portfolio.
Training & Knowledge Transfer
- Where applicable, assist in providing technical training to sales teams, project implementation teams, installation teams, other relevant stakeholders.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Ensure technical drawings and designs meet approved company standards.
- Conduct quality checks before releasing drawings and BOQs.
- Verify that design outputs correspond with customer requirements and approved project scope.
- Ensure technical documentation is complete and traceable.
- Escalate technical risks or design discrepancies to the Senior Technical Designer.
- Comply with applicable company procedures, health and safety requirements and relevant technical standards.
- Maintain professional and ethical standards in technical design and costing activities
Other Requirements
MINIMUM ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum: Bachelor's Degree in one of the following or a closely related discipline:
- Agricultural Engineering.
- Irrigation Engineering.
- Water Engineering.
- Civil Engineering.
- Mechanical Engineering.
- Agricultural Technology/Engineering.
- Other relevant technical engineering discipline.
Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Engineering, Irrigation Engineering, Water Engineering, Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
Additional training/certification in CAD, irrigation design, hydraulics, greenhouse technology or project management will be an advantage.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Minimum Experience: 2–3 years of relevant professional experience in technical design, irrigation, greenhouse systems, agricultural engineering, CAD draughting, project estimation or a closely related field.
Preferred Experience – The ideal candidate should have practical exposure to:

Where applicable, membership or eligibility for membership of a recognised professional body relevant to the candidate's discipline will be an added advantage.

- Agricultural engineering.
- Greenhouse technology.
- Hydraulic design.
- Project management skills will also be advantageous.
