Outspan Hospital started operations with the establishment of an Out Patient Department on August 7, 2001. A month later, the In Patient Department was opened with a capacity of 21 beds. Currently, the Out Patient Department has evolved into a one stop shop for all medical services expected of a national referral hospital. Despite the high cost of day to day operations and purchase and maintenance of modern medical equipment, The Outspan Hospital has retained very low rates in charges and fees. Some of the rates have never been reviewed since the facility opened its doors.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Conducting comprehensive physiotherapy assessments and developing individualised treatment and rehabilitation plans.
  • Providing physiotherapy interventions for patients with musculoskeletal, neurological, orthopaedic, cardiopulmonary, paediatric, geriatric, and other rehabilitation needs.
  • Managing both inpatient and outpatient physiotherapy services.
  • Providing post-operative and post-injury rehabilitation and supporting patients to regain mobility, function, independence, and quality of life.
  • Conducting patient education on exercise, posture, mobility, ergonomics, prevention of injury, and self-management.
  • Prescribing and supervising appropriate therapeutic exercises and rehabilitation programmes.
  • Assessing and advising on mobility aids, assistive devices, positioning, and functional independence.
  • Working collaboratively with doctors, occupational therapists, nurses, orthopaedic teams, rehabilitation professionals, and other healthcare providers.
  • Supervising, mentoring, coaching, and evaluating physiotherapy staff and students.
  • Developing and implementing departmental policies, SOPs, clinical protocols, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinating departmental operations, including duty rosters, workflow, equipment, supplies, and service delivery.
  • Monitoring departmental performance against agreed clinical, operational, quality, and financial targets.
  • Maintaining accurate patient records, treatment notes, statistics, reports, and other required documentation.
  • Participating in clinical audits, quality improvement projects, patient safety initiatives, and continuous professional development.
  • Promoting excellent patient experience and maintaining high standards of professional and ethical practice.
  • Supporting hospital programmes such as health promotion, community outreach, medical camps, and rehabilitation education.
  • Participating in departmental and hospital meetings and contributing to strategic planning.
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant Kenyan healthcare laws, regulatory requirements, professional standards, hospital policies, and infection-prevention practices.
  • Identifying opportunities for development and expansion of physiotherapy and rehabilitation services.
  • Performing any other duties relevant to the position as assigned by management.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Physiotherapy from a recognised university.
  • Valid registration and licence to practise from the relevant regulatory council in Kenya.
  • Compliance with all applicable legal and professional requirements for physiotherapy practice in Kenya.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in a managerial/supervisory position, preferably within a hospital or healthcare setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in departmental leadership, staff supervision, service planning, and performance management.
  • Strong knowledge of physiotherapy assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, documentation, and patient safety.
  • Specialisation or postgraduate training in a relevant area of physiotherapy will be an added advantage.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership, problem-solving, and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Commitment to professional ethics, confidentiality, quality improvement, and continuous professional development.
