The position
The Aga Khan Education Service, Kenya (AKES, Kenya) operates five schools in Kenya and provides nursery to senior secondary education in both national and international curricula. It is part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a group of private development agencies working to improve living conditions and opportunities for people of all faiths and origins in specific regions of the developing world.
The Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi (AKA, Nairobi) is an IB continuum school in Kenya authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate curriculum (IB) from Early Years through the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the Diploma Programme (DP). With over 1000 students, AKA, Nairobi is a multi-cultural school with a variety of nationalities represented in our student and teaching faculty.
The Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi - Senior School has an opening for the position of: French Teacher (with the possibility of a Head of Department role).
Role Summary
The French Teacher will deliver engaging, inquiry-based instruction fostering language proficiency, cultural awareness and critical thinking. The role involves planning and implementing IB-aligned lessons, assessing student progress using criterion-based approaches and supporting holistic student development. The teacher will contribute to a collaborative learning environment, integrate technology effectively and inspire students to become confident communicators and globally minded individuals.
The position will also potentially serve as Head of Department, providing leadership, curriculum oversight and supporting continuous improvement in teaching and learning.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and deliver high-quality French lessons aligned with IB (MYP & DP) curriculum standards.
- Develop students’ proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing in French.
- Foster cultural awareness and appreciation for the language.
- Design differentiated learning experiences to meet diverse student needs.
- Use inquiry-based and student-centered teaching approaches.
- Implement formative and summative assessments using IB criteria.
- Provide timely, accurate feedback and maintain clear student progress records.
- Prepare students for internal and external assessments, including IB examinations.
- Create a safe, inclusive and engaging classroom environment.
- Act as a Homeroom Tutor, supporting students’ academic and pastoral needs.
- Contribute to co-curricular activities, language clubs and school events.
- Engage actively in parent communication and Parent-Teacher Conferences.
- Participate in collaborative planning with the Languages Department.
The requirements
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education with specialization in French.
- 3 years of relevant IB (MYP and/or DP) experience in the subject area is highly desirable.
- Teachers Service Commission (TSC) registration certificate.
